History Forum Series at Greensprings

October 25, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the start of WWII the Navy conceived of a revolutionary physical training program which proved to be the most transformational of the war effort. The V-5 Pre-Flight Training Program used sports, and specifically football, to ready our troops going overseas. Author Carey Henry Keefe sheds light on this little-known program of the Navy and how football helped win WWII and shaped the sport post-war in an illustrated book talk to be presented at 10 am on October 25, part of the History Forum Series presented at Greensprings in Springfield, Virginia. Keefe is the author of A Tide of Dreams:The Untold Story of Coaches Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant, Carney Laslie and Frank Moseley. A Tide of Dreams is the story of Keefe’s grandfather, Carney Laslie, and his journey with Bryant and Moseley from their time as players for the University of Alabama, to WWII, and into their years coaching together post-war, culminating in their first National Championship title in 1961. The presentation, however, focuses on the Navy’s Pre-Flight program and includes rare photographs and videos from the training center at UNC-Chapel Hill and little-known accounts of not only Bryant, Laslie and Moseley but also other greatest generation coaches who trained and served at Pre-Flight schools: Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, astronaut John Glenn, and Coach John Wooden, among the many. It is for anyone who enjoys WWII, military and sports history.
