MY GIFT TO YOU

This past week I received an email from Paul Karem, an ex-Kentucky football player, who, after reading A TIDE OF DREAMS, sent me a link to the documentary BLACK IN BLUE, directed by academy award-winning documentarist, Paul Wagner.

Karem and Wagner, both Kentucky alums, teamed up to bring this untold account to light and it is beautifully told through the talents of Wagner, who not only wrote and directed the documentary, but also narrated the film about the four University of Kentucky football players who broke the color line in the Southeastern Conference in the 1960s. The result is a story that now takes its place legitimately alongside others that showcase a piece of history in the march towards racial equality in sports programs.

Powerful as well is Wagner’s profile of the players from that time and place which reflect a generosity of spirit overall that is also color-blind,  reminding us that it is our common bond of humanity that unites us. Treat yourself to a viewing! I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.

On a lighter note - and a musical one at that….If you’re looking for something to listen to that embodies an enjoyable throwback to the sound of the 60’s, check out the album TIME CAPSULE, a new release from Flip Morris, member of a one-hit-wonder band in the 60’s, which he dropped on Spotify this past year.

Morris wrote and produced all the tracks and with song titles like Round and Round, and Don’t Play with My Heart, it is a pleasantly low-key but upbeat playlist making for nice background music with its periodic electric guitar riffs that don’t overwhelm, and a decidedly 60’s -early 70’s sound. We had friends over for dinner last week and I had TIME CAPSULE playing in the background and it was perfect – unobtrusive and subtle. Just the touch of nostalgia I was looking for. If you’re looking for a little of the same, check it out on Spotify.

And many thanks for helping to make 2022 an especially memorable year for me.

Best wishes for a happy new year!

Carey
